The math curriculum
builds on the skills developed through work in the practical life
and sensorial areas, and is designed to develop a concrete
understanding of abstract mathematical concepts.
Using hands-on materials, the children can easily comprehend facts and skills
of arithmetic through manipulation and repetition. As understanding develops,
a move to more abstract thinking can be made.
The goal of the math work is to acquire the concept of arithmetic operations, not rote memorization. Therefore, the accuracy of anwers is of secondary importance at this stage
Every child develops at his/her own pace. Concepts introduced are:
- Basic counting (spindle boxes, number rods)
- Place values (teen board, bank game, bead chains)
- Addition and subtraction (stamp game)
